Πυρετός προετοιμασίας επικρατεί στα κράτη που θα συμμετάσχουν στην 15η διάσκεψη της Σύμβασης CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) για το Διεθνές Εμπόριο των Ειδών της Άγριας Πανίδας και Χλωρίδας που Κινδυνεύουν με Εξαφάνιση

The 4WD with seats made of whale penis

Dartz Prombron Monaco Red Diamond Edition

If four-wheel-drives weren’t politically incorrect enough, a Russian car maker is offering one with whale penis leather trim. By RICHARD BLACKBURN.

A Russian armoured-car builder is boasting that its latest vehicle has seats covered with “whale-penis leather”. The €1 million ($1.6 million) Dartz Prombron Monaco Red Diamond Edition armoured car has been developed by the same company, RussoBaltique, that built armoured vehicles for Tsar Nicholas, Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky.

On its official website, the company says the whale-penis leather is the same as that used by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis on the yacht Christina O.

Onassis is rumoured to have had some of the barstools on the yacht, the world’s most expensive at the time, covered in the controversial leather.

The vehicle is being specially prepared for the ultra-exclusive Top Marques luxury motor show in Monaco next year.

Dartz’s armoured vehicles weigh roughly 4 tonnes, are powered by V8s putting out between 300kW and 400kW and are “rocket grenade-proof” according to the website.
For those wondering just how may whales may need to be harvested to outfit the special edition, the answer is not many. The penis of the Blue Whale, for example, can grow up to 2.4 metres.

Comments Chris Butler-Stroud - October 16, 2009

Please see this amended version of my previous comment as I checked a few things
I have been following this story on the blogs for some days, and thought it was a joke to begin with. If it isn't a joke then I am not sure its not going to happen as the carmaker's maybe hope. The use of such whale products is illegal under CITES regulations for most countries if the manufacturer intends to export the car with such whale products. Only a few countries have reservations to the CITES ban on exports of whale products. One also has to ask where the supposed leather is going to come from. I see the carmaker's site has a picture of what appears to be an orca, and some sort of baleen whale, but all are protected except in a few countries. For example, the take of gray whales in Russia is only allowed in cases of aboriginal subsistence hunts and should not be used for such commercial purposes. If the car is manufactured in a European country, (I am not sure if the company is based in the EU) then the use of whale products is also outlawed throughout the EU.
I do hope that this is a publicity stunt. You can check these issues on

Sapir gets his yacht back...minus his stuffed animal zoo.

NY Billionaire's Yacht Seized Over Endangered Animals

A $26 million yacht with
Versace interiors owned by cab driver-turned-fertilizer king Tamir Sapir - who lives in Manhattan's famed Duke-Semans mansion (above) - was seized by customs officials in Miami this week over trophies made from the skins of endangered animals. The yacht, named the Mystère, was found to contain zebra skins, a jaguar skin rug, Bengal tiger and African lion heads, cigar boxes covered in elephant hide, a reticulated python cigarette holder, and large carved ivory tusks, the Miami Herald reports. Sapir, an emigré from Russia whose $1.4 billion fortune is now mainly invested in real estate, will get the yacht back minus the gruesome décor after paying a $150,000 fine
